On Sunday January 1, 2023 at 10:00 a.m., please join us in-person for the “Fire Ceremony,” led by Gail DeVilbiss, a service that has become a traditional welcome to the new year at MTVUUF. Gail will lead this service of renewal, focusing on looking back over the year that has ended, reflecting on what we wish to leave behind, and looking forward to the year that is just beginning, reflecting on what we hope to bring into our lives.

The congregation is invited to bring favorite dishes to a pot-luck meal that will follow the service.

On  Sunday, January 8, at 10:30 a.m., Ryan Burge will be the speaker at this in-person service. You are welcome to gather at 10:00 for coffee before the 10:30 service.  Ryan Burge is pastor of Mt. Vernon’s First Baptist Church, the only local American Baptist church in Mt. Vernon. Ryan will be discussing this denomination, the American Baptists USA, once known as the Northern Baptists, thus distinguishing them from the much more conservative South Baptists.

The Fellowship is fortunate to be visited by a scholar such as Ryan: He is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Eastern Illinois University. Also a national expert and researcher on the interaction of religiosity and political behavior, Ryan has published numerous articles in important scholarly journals, and he is author of several books on contemporary religious trends. In addition, his research findings and articles have been presented in The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, NBC, the Associated Press, Newsweek, Al-Jazeera, Reuters, Christianity Today, Religion News Service, and C-SPAN. Last year, you may have even seen him featured on CBS’ “60 Minutes.”    A social hour will follow the service.

On Sunday, January 15, at 10:00a.m., guest speaker Bob Mooney will speak about moving away from fundamentalism, in “The Warm Blanket of Certainty: the Allure of Simple Answers.” This is an in-person service. Please join us for a coffee hour after the service. The Board Meeting will follow the  social hour.

On Sunday, January 22, at 10:00 a.m., Diane Schwitz will lead this in-person Open Reading service. Please bring a  poem, short reading, or music to share, if you are inspired. Please join us for a coffee hour after the service.

On Sunday, January 29, at 10:00 a.m., Yvonne Martin will lead this Open Reading service on Zoom on topics ranging from Ground Hog Day to the connection between Candlemas Day and lore of general superstitions. You are invited to bring poetry, a reading, or music on these topics of Weather & Lore, or other topics of interest to UUs, to share during the service. If you have music to share, please email music links or files to uufmtvsec@gmail.com . As we believe there is no one right way to lead a religious or spiritual life and we value each individual’s spiritual journey, Open Readings services help us learn about each other’s paths, and can be some of our most special services. Visitors are welcome. For Zoom information please email information@mtvernonuuf.org . A virtual social hour follows the service.

Please check back through the month for updates. Please join us after Sunday services for coffee and conversation.
